When most people think about construction, they picture hard hats, heavy lifting, and maybe even a side job. At the Carpenters Union, we see every day how construction careers change lives, support families and build real futures.
Let’s break down five of the most common myths about working in construction.
The truth: Union construction work isn’t just something you do to pass the time. It’s a career with long-term potential. Our members go through years of hands-on training, earn certifications, and grow into leadership roles like journeypersons, instructors, or even business owners. It’s a career you can build on!
The truth: Union carpenters earn solid pay. Between competitive hourly rates, overtime opportunities, and prevailing wage jobs, members can take home a strong paycheck. And that’s before you even factor in the benefits: full healthcare, pension plans, annuities, and other financial support that non-union workers and even some college graduates often don’t have access to.
The truth: College is just one path. A union apprenticeship is another and it doesn’t come with student debt. Our apprentices earn while they learn and graduate ready to work full-time with valuable skills in hand that no one can take away. Many end up earning more than people who went the traditional college route.
The truth: Union job sites put safety first. Members are trained in everything from OSHA standards to fall protection, and every job starts with safety meetings and procedures. As for the work itself, it takes serious skill. From reading blueprints to using layout technology and building complex systems, the union trades are highly trained.
The truth: That used to be the case, but not anymore. The trades are becoming more diverse every year. Women and workers from all backgrounds are finding success and support in the union. The Carpenters Union has built programs specifically to help open the door for underrepresented groups and create opportunities for everyone.
Construction careers deserve more credit. They’re not fallback plans, they’re real, rewarding paths to success. If you or someone you know is looking for a future with purpose, good wages and benefits, the trades might be the path for you.
